Celebrations of two millionth passenger came a month earlier compared to last year

On 10 June, Vilnius Airport welcomed its two millionth passenger counting from the beginning of the year. Vilnius Airport achieved the milestone almost a month earlier compared to 2017 and almost a month and a half earlier than two years ago. Achieving such milestones becomes possible thanks to the stable growth of the new route expansion policy and increasing numbers of travelling passengers.

According to CEO of Lithuanian Airports Marius Gelžinis, this year the airport welcomed one millionth passenger on 2 April, which is almost two weeks earlier compared to 2017. In the first five months of 2018, passenger traffic rose by 17 per cent.

“These results are possible thanks to the constantly expanding network of outbound flights from the Lithuanian airports and their increasing frequency. Compared to last year, the number of flights at Vilnius Airport in the period between January and May increased by 8 percent. It should be noted that growth has been recorded not only in Vilnius, but also in Kaunas and Palanga airports,” noted Mr. Gelžinis.

The passenger traffic increased by almost 14 per cent reaching 380,000 in Kaunas, while in Palanga it rose by 4 per cent and reached almost 110,000 passengers. During the first five months of 2018, the number of flights in Kaunas and Palanga airports rose by 4 and 6 per cent respectively.

In the same period, the overall number of regular route flights operating from all Lithuanian airports also grew and now reaches 86. Vilnius Airport is in the lead after managing to increase the number of regular routes from 55 to 59. Kaunas follows in second place and can offer 20 routes compared to 17 it operated during the same period last year. During summer season, Palanga Airport operates 9 regular flights.

During the first five months of 2018, Lithuanian Airports welcomed around 2.3 million passengers and serviced almost 24,000 flights. It is planned that by the end of the year passenger flow number may reach 6 million, the record of all time, while overall flight number should peak at around 60,000.
