Restricted baggage items

What amount of cash, cigarettes and alcohol can I carry in my baggage?

The amount of alcohol and tobacco products purchased or carried for personal use is not restricted while travelling within the EU. Each country may set its restrictions on the amount of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages for personal use. It is highly recommended to contact the airport customs with regard to this issue: Departures tel. (+370 5) 2330317, Arrivals tel. (+370 5) 2306117.

What amount of medicines can I take onboard?

You can take small amounts of prescription and over-the-counter medicines for personal use, such as painkillers, medication for fever, digestive disorders, malaria, contraceptive pills, etc., in your hand luggage. We recommend you to take a prescription or a medication passport for prescription medicines. Insulin is considered a vital liquid drug, thus, the 100 ml limitation for liquids allowed as hand luggage is not applied. Please contact the airport customs with regard to the transportation of medicines as hand or checked baggage in advance by dialling +370 5 2330317.

Is there a VAT refund service (Tax Free) at the airport?

The airport customs office provides a 24-hour service in the departures terminal, on the left side, in front of the passenger check post. If you cannot find a customs employee on site, ask the aviation security officer for assistance.

What restrictions apply on food?

Checked baggage

Are power banks and backup lithium-ion batteries permitted in a checked baggage?

No, they are not permitted.

Carry-on luggage can contain no more than two such devices. The capacity of a single device cannot exceed 160 Wh. In the event were the capacity of a device exceeds  100 Wh, its transportation shall be coordinated with the air carrier. Devices with the capacity exceeding 160 Wh are prohibited on airplanes.

Can I bring canned foods in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I carry jam or pickled vegetables in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I carry car parts in checked baggage?

Yes, you can, if the part has not been used as a vehicle fuel system component (it was not in contact with combustible materials, e.g. fuel, grease, oil).

Can I carry weights in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I take a knife in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I bring tradesman's tools (screwdrivers, pincers, chisels, etc.) in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I carry toy guns (pistols, bows, slingshots, swords, etc.) in checked baggage?

Yes, you can.

Can I carry sparklers in checked baggage?

Sparklers are prohibited in both hand luggage and checked baggage.

Can I leave my baggage at the airport?

You cannot leave your baggage at the airport unattended. It might be taken by the aviation security officer for examination. If you have too much baggage and you wish to leave it at the airport, you can use a paid baggage storage service Pack&Fly. What are the requirements for carrying electronic and IQOS-type cigarettes? Can they be shipped in registered and hand luggage?

Any electronic cigarettes (including those that evaporate or heat e-liquids, tobacco) allowed to be carried only in hand luggage. They are not allowed to carry them in checked baggage. During the flight, the electric cigarettes must be protected from unintentional switching on, and it is prohibited for the passenger to load during flight. The power of an electronic cigarette battery may not exceed 100 Wh.

Can a cooler bag be carried inside your hand luggage?

A passenger may bring cooler bag onto the aircraft, however, cooling elements/cold packs, which contain liquid (turns to ice when refrigerated) and can be in hard or liquid form, are subject to prohibited liquids requirements:

  1. cooling elements/cold packs no larger than 100 ml should be placed into re-sealable, transparent plastic bag of 1 litre capacity together with other small liquid quantities. It can be carried inside the hand luggage.   
  2. cooling elements/cold packs larger than 100 ml are prohibited from carrying inside the hand luggage. 

This explanation is valid for cooler bags only and not for transporting mobile fridges.

In cases where  the capacity of a device exceeds  100 Wh, its transportation shall be coordinated with the air carrier. Devices with the capacity exceeding 160 Wh are prohibited on airplanes.

Can I take cosmetics in hand luggage?

You can have containers, including cosmetics, the volume of which does not exceed 100 ml in your hand luggage; all containers have to fit in a single 1 l resealable plastic bag. Look for plastic bags at check-in desks at the airport's terminal or next to a passenger check post.

What size a 1 l resealable bag should be?

A 1 litre resealable plastic bag should not be bigger than 16 x 24 cm.

What substances are considered liquids?

Substances or products in the form of liquids, aerosols or gels, i.e. pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures, the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, shampoo, drinks (water, juice, lemonade and other beverages), soups, mayonnaise, yoghurt, syrups, perfume, shaving foam and other similar products are considered liquids.

Can I carry food in hand luggage?

Solid foods can be carried in both hand luggage and checked baggage. All liquids (e.g. yoghurt, juice) carried in hand luggage must be in containers not exceeding 100 ml. All liquids must be placed into a single 1 l bag. All liquids (excluding medicines, baby food and liquids in safe disposable bags) which exceed 100 ml must be carried in checked baggage.

Can I take a drone in hand luggage?

You can take a drone in hand luggage, if the battery capacity does not exceed 100 Wh. If the drone battery capacity is higher, i.e., from100 Wh to 160 Wh, the carriage must be approved by the airline. If the drone battery capacity exceeds 160 Wh, the carriage is prohibited both in hand luggage and checked baggage.
You can have maximum 15 electronic devices with lithium batteries, including power banks in your hand luggage.  

Can I take butter (ordinary, nut, or chocolate butter) in hand luggage?

Carrying butter in hand luggage is prohibited, but you can put it in your checked baggage.

Can I take honey in hand luggage?

You can bring honey of any consistency in your hand luggage.

Can I take pate in hand luggage?

Carrying pate in hand luggage is prohibited, but you can put it in your checked baggage.

Do I need to present a copy of a prescription(s) to an aviation security officer when I carry medicines in hand luggage?

No, it is not required, but we recommend having a prescription copy with you, if possible. A passenger may need to explain an aviation security officer that liquid medicine is carried in hand luggage is vitally important.  

Do medicines (liquids) carried in hand luggage have to be packed in a 1 litre transparent resealable plastic bag together with other liquids?

Medicines (liquids) do not have to be packed in a 1 litre plastic bag. You have to take them out from your hand luggage and provide them to be screened separately.

Does the 100 ml restriction apply to medicines (liquids) carried in hand luggage?

The 100 ml restriction does not apply to medicines (liquids). Medicines are evaluated based on the “life or death” criterion. For instance, contact lens solution is not a vital liquid, thus you should have no more than 100 ml of it. Insulin, liquid injection medicines in ampoules, liquid cough medicines, etc., may exceed 100 ml. You are allowed to carry as much medicines as required not only for your flight but for the entire trip (i.e., to the final destination).
Each case of carrying medicines may be different; thus, the situation is assessed based on the criteria of reasonableness.

What type of medicines can I carry in hand luggage?

There are no restrictions for medicines. Liquid medicines are subject to relevant aviation security screening procedures. You have to justify the need for and quantity of medicines to be used during your trip, i.e., aviation security officers are entitled to prohibit carrying liquid medicines in your hand luggage, if their quantity exceeds to the one required for the planned duration of the trip.

What amount of food/liquids for infants can be carried in hand luggage?

Legal acts do not provide for a specific amount of infant food which a passenger may carry in hand luggage. You can take as much food as it is required for the entire trip (the remaining part should be kept in checked baggage). Aviation security staff are entitled not to allow the carriage of excessive amount in case it is considered that there is more liquid food than required for the trip.  

Can I take car parts in hand luggage?

Yes, you can, if the part has not been used as a vehicle fuel system component (it was not in contact with combustible substances, e.g. fuel, grease, oil). Please contact Aviation security division by phone +370 611 40747 for specific details of the shipment

Can I carry canned foods in hand luggage?

It is not allowed to carry canned foods kept in liquid.

Can I bring jam or pickled vegetables in hand luggage?

It is not allowed to carry jam or pickled vegetables in hand luggage because these products are considered liquids.

Can I carry medicines in hand luggage?

There are no restrictions for solid medicines (e.g. tablets, powder medicines) in your hand luggage. Liquid medicines can be carried in hand luggage in containers not exceeding 100 ml. You can take as many containers as you can fit into a 1 litre resealable plastic bag (you can put liquid cosmetics, contact lens solution, cough medications, etc. into it). You are allowed to carry liquid medicines exceeding 100 ml in your hand luggage when the medicines are required for your trip and are prescribed (a passenger must present a prescription indicating the name of medicine and the surname of the passenger to whom the medicine has been prescribed to an aviation security officer). You have to take out liquid medicines exceeding 100 ml from your hand luggage before security screening and show them to an aviation security officer.

What amount of liquid injection medicine can I carry in hand luggage?

Legal acts do not provide for a specific amount of injection medicine which a passenger can carry in hand luggage but aviation security staff will only allow such amount onboard which is required for the entire trip (the remaining medicine should be put into checked baggage). A passenger must evaluate how much medicine will be required during the trip and provide an aviation security officer with a logical explanation, e.g. a passenger is flying from Lithuania to London (an aviation security officer sees it in the boarding pass presented at the airport) but the passenger will further fly from London to Beijing; therefore, when carrying a larger amount of medicine the passenger must present a proof of a longer trip to the aviation security officer, i.e. a boarding pass for the flight London - Beijing, etc.

Can I bring weights in hand luggage?

It is not allowed to bring weights in hand luggage but you can carry them in your checked baggage.

Can I carry a knife in hand luggage?

You can carry a knife in your hand luggage if its blade is not longer than 6 cm, it unfolds easily (it does not open automatically) and it is not sharpened on both ends.

Can I bring tradesman's tools (screwdrivers, pincers, chisels, etc.) in hand luggage?

Tradesman's tools can be carried in hand luggage if their blade or shaft is not longer than 6 cm. You can bring tradesman's tools with any blade or shaft in checked baggage.

Can I carry lighters or matches in hand luggage?

You can carry a box of regular matches or a regular lighter on your person only (e.g. in your pocket, not your hand luggage or bag). You can bring a Zippo lighter on your person only if the fluid in it is absorbed, i.e. there is a wick in the lighter.

Can I bring lighter fluid and liquid gas cartridges?

It is forbidden to carry lighter fluid and liquid gas cartridges by air transport.

Can I carry toy guns (pistols, bows, slingshots, swords, etc.) in hand luggage?

It is not allowed to carry toy guns in hand luggage but you can bring them in checked baggage.

Can I carry an electric potato grater in my hand luggage?

Yes, you can, but only after you remove cutting blades from it.

Can I carry sparklers in my hand luggage?

Sparklers are prohibited in both hand luggage and checked baggage.

Can I leave hand luggage at the airport?

You cannot leave your baggage at the airport unattended. It might be taken by the aviation security officer for examination.
